Uscì nelle sale dopo gli attentati alle Twin Towers dell'11 settembre e sparì ben presto dalla circolazione, anche a causa della scena in cui è coinvolto un aereo che perde un reattore. Ma il passaparola ha fatto resuscitare questo film, che ormai conta stuoli di aficionados...

Lo stato di cult di cui gode Donnie Darko è dovuto al fatto che molti giovani si sono riconosciuti nel personaggio principale. E' il medesimo flash autoterapeutico che ha reso immortali James Dean, Il giovane Holden e Arancia meccanica.
Per un adolescente, certo, non è difficile sentirsi vicino a Donnie; in fondo il ragazzo, per essere un matto, è abbastanza innocuo - oltre che quasi casto. La sua ribellione, a fronte di genitori simpatici nonostante il modus vivendi "borghese" e che dimostrano di amarlo (ciò nel film non viene mai messo in discussione), nasce dallo scombussolamento interiore e non da una riflessione metafisica e/o sul sociale.
Alcuni critici stranamente ritengono Donnie Darko un film che mostra la protesta giovanile contro il sistema scolastico e, più in generale, contro gli adulti, ma in realtà tale presunta rivolta si limita ai soliti gesti di bullismo in classe e nel cortile scolastico, oltre che alle atroci - e sterili - mascherate di Halloween. Insomma, il telaio portante è quello di un film di/sui teen-agers. Ovvio che viene tracciata anche una storia d'amore (del resto è quella l'età per amare!), e il rischio latente era quello di creare un'ennesima fiaba moderna, imperdonabilmente stupida per via di un romanticismo sciatto e rimasticato da ragazzini stelle-e-strisce; per fortuna però Richard Kelly ha voluto rendere omaggio a Philip K. Dick e il film, dopo essere scivolato sul paludoso sentiero dell'horror (tramite le allucinazioni del protagonista borderline), si risolve in un bel rebus fantascientifico.
E' proprio la struttura narrativa ad affascinarci maggiormente. Anche se è individuabile una storyline o trama che dir si voglia, Kelly mima le acrobazie fabulanti di un Kurt Vonnegut e la vicenda finisce per rivelarsi un serpente che si mangia la coda o, per usare un termine matematico, un nastro di Möbius. Non può essere altrimenti, d'altronde, quando viene affrontato il tema dei viaggi temporali, i quali, come si sa, comportano uno o più paradossi, costringendo perciò gli scrittori a inventarsi una logica alternativa. A questo proposito, abbiamo il sospetto che l'autore (e regista) di Donnie Darko abbia attinto da un altro maestro della fantascienza, ovvero da Murray Leinster (vedi soprattutto la "trovata" dell'Universo Tangente), che di viaggi e paradossi temporali fu uno dei primi specialisti, tanto da fondare su di essi la propria carriera scribatoria.

La recitazione di Jake Gyllenhaal è indimenticabile. Come già successe per Anthony Perkins in Psycho, Jake "è" Donnie Darko. Impossibile ormai immaginarsi qualcun altro nello stesso ruolo. La sua addirittura non è nemmeno più un'interpretazione nel senso di "abile prestazione istrionica", bensì una vera e propria incarnazione.
A Donnie/Jake appare un inquietante coniglio che è il capovolgimento orrifico di Harvey, la creatura che accompagna il docile matto James Stewart in una commedia del 1950.

Ricordate? Il titolo di quella pellicola in bianco-e-nero è proprio Harvey. Là il protagonista, Elwood, alias James Stewart, è quasi uno stinco di santo e, sebbene gli manchi qualche rotella, non è privo di una certa saggezza filosofica. Ecco uno dei suoi monologhi:

• "Harvey e io sediamo nei bar... prendiamo un bicchierino o due, facciamo suonare il juke box. E subito tutte le facce si girano verso di me, e sorridono, e dicono 'non sappiamo come ti chiami amico, ma sembri un tipo simpatico'. Harvey e io ci accendiamo in quei momenti d’oro. Siamo entrati come estranei... e subito abbiamo degli amici! E loro si avvicinano, e siedono con noi, e parlano con noi. Parlano delle grandi cose terribili che hanno commesso, e delle grandi cose meravigliose che faranno. Delle loro speranze, dei loro rimpianti, dei loro amori, dei loro rancori. E tutto in larga scala, perché nessuno porta mai nulla di piccolo dentro un bar. E poi io presento loro Harvey... e lui è più grande e più straordinario di qualsiasi cosa loro possano mai mostrare a me. E quando se ne vanno, se ne vanno impressionati. Le stesse persone raramente ritornano; ma questa è invidia, caro mio. C’è una piccola dose d’invidia in ciascuno di noi."

Invece Frank, la creatura dalle fattezze di coniglio in Donnie Darko, è cattivo. E'  l'antagonista dell'eroe/antieroe del film, non il suo compagno buono e comprensibile. Per Donnie, alle prese con la pazzia intus et foris, non c'è spazio per i discorsi o i gesti buonisti. Il motore di jet è precipitato sul suo letto quando lui era assente e dunque si è potuto salvare. Almeno questo è quello che vede o crede di vedere lo spettatore...

Sinossi di Donnie Darko

Il personaggio che dà il titolo al film, un adolescente americano con problemi psichici, durante un attacco di sonnambulismo che lo porta fuori di casa si imbatte in Frank, un coniglio gigante che gli predice la fine del mondo. E' la notte del 2 ottobre 1988. In tivù viene trasmesso il duello elettorale dei due candidati alla Casa Bianca: il repubblicano George Bush senior e il democratico Michael Dukakis. "Il mondo finirà tra 28 giorni, 6 ore, 42 minuti e 12 secondi" lo avverte il coniglio. Quando Donnie si risveglia e fa per rincasare, scopre che la sua camera è stata devastata da un motore di aereo caduto dal cielo! Da qui in poi, accadono altri strani fenomeni che minacciano la vita delle persone a lui care. Intanto, la sua schizofrenia dilaga: i suoi occhi riescono a vedere "lombrichi" trasparenti che escono dal plesso solare delle persone (i famigerati wormholes), proprio come aveva predetto Mother Death (il cui nome è stato tradotto in italiano con "Nonna Morte"), un'eccentrica scrittrice ora vecchissima e semidemente, autrice di The Philosophy of Time Travel. La vecchia conosce bene tali prodigi. Anzi, a quanto pare, solo la pazzia consente di poter viaggiare nel tempo...
"28 giorni" è l'informazione fornita da Frank. Difatti, tappa dopo tappa, il film ci porta fino al 30 ottobre, alla vigilia di Halloween. L'iperbole si fa sempre più vertiginosa finché non ci si vede costretti a sfogliare il calendario all'incontrario.

"Alcuni nascono con la tragedia nel sangue" dice a un certo punto Gretchen, la ragazza di Donnie...

Donnie Darko fa a lungo la spaccata tra horror e science fiction. Come detto, non si può non pensare a Philip K. Dick, il romanziere americano che così bene ha saputo descrivere la schizofrenia. Similmente a Dick, Richard Kelly rende "reali" le allucinazioni per poi coniugarle alla teoria della relatività (che, fino a prova contraria, è scaturita dalla mente di uno scienziato, non da quella di un appassionato di fenomeni paranormali). L'autore del film ci suggerisce che c'è un Universo Primario e ce n'è uno Tangente. Quando da quest'ultimo fuoriesce un artefatto (in questo caso, la turbina di un grosso velivolo), è come se si scoperchiasse il vaso di Pandora: la linea di confine spaziotemporale si spezza, le dimensioni a noi note non combaciano più... in pratica, la follia si fa normalità.
Il protagonista compie degli atti vandalici ma è, in fondo, una vittima innocente: non si può imputare a lui, difatti, la circostanza dello squilibrio chimico che avviene nel suo cervello. E, forse, il tunnel dentro cui lo ha spinto la malattia, dove il tempo si ripete uguale all'infinito e ogni cosa è già predestinata e ritorna, è l'unico luogo in cui si può arrivare veramente a comprendere la quintessenza delle cose del mondo.

Accenni e allusioni "colte"

Oltre al richiamo al coniglio Harvey (che è una reprise di quello di Alice in Wonderland), il film è pieno di citazioni, associazioni di idee e microeventi che legano l'ieri all'oggi, un'opera letteraria e/o cinematografica all'altra. Così, uno dei personaggi è rappresentato da una vecchia pazza che risponde al nome di Roberta Sparrow. Ne abbiamo già accennato nella "Sinossi": la Sparrow, detta "Mother Death", è la fittizia autrice di un libro sui viaggi nel tempo.
Nel corso della campagna di pubblicità per il rilancio di Donnie Darko, deciso a distanza di un paio di anni dall'esordio fallimentare, qualcuno della produzione ha addirittura scritto il libro della Sparrow, che io ho diligentemente scaricato sul mio computer e "parcheggiato" su uno dei miei server (scarica The Philosophy of Time Travel in formato .pdf).

Un altro libro, stavolta reale, di cui si parla nel film e che qualcuno vocifera sia stato tra le massime fonti d'ispirazioni di Anthony Burgess per il suo Arancia a orologeria (Arancia meccanica), è The Destructors, di Graham Green. La storia di The Destructors si svolge a Londra durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale e tratta dell'impatto socio-psicologico che il conflitto armato ha su un gruppo di adolescenti, che scaricano le loro frustrazioni trasformandosi in vandali...

Il sequel: S. Darko

2009: esce la "continuazione" di Donnie Darko. Il titolo è S. Darko.
Nathan Atkins ne è l'autore. Ed è bravo nel suo mestiere, bisogna dirlo. Il primo film mai realizzato nato dalla sua penna è stato uno short dal titolo Cultivation (del 2003) che, guarda caso, parla di un mondo magico parallelo. Dunque, è lo sceneggiatore più qualificato per un sequel di Donnie Darko.
In S. Darko, sono trascorsi sette anni dalla morte di Donnie (7: cifra carica di significati...).  Samantha, la sorellina del defunto, è intanto cresciuta. Ha 17 anni e, insieme al suo amico Corey, si mette in viaggio per una vacanza da trascorrere a Los Angeles. Durante il tragitto, entrambi vengono tormentati da strane visioni... Tornano qui gli wormholes o buchi di tempo.
S. Darko (la "S" sta per "Samantha") è stato scritto seguendo le direttive di Richard Kelly, ma questi si è dissociato dal film e la regia è stata affidata a Chris Fisher.
Impossibile dire se l'operazione-sequel sia riuscita. Diciamo semplicemente che si tratta di un  film diverso. Per onor del vero, sia la critica sia il pubblico lo hanno giudicato "perdibile".
